Indian Board Landscape (CBSE, CISCE, State Boards)

"Board Exam" is not one exam. Three families of boards conduct Class 10 and Class 12 in India, each on its own calendar, syllabus and result cycle. All three are direct-conducted by their respective board — not by NTA. Results publish raw marks per subject; there is no normalization, no percentile scoring, no shift system. Each subject paper is a single sitting on a single day.

• CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education): The largest national board. Class 10 + Class 12 exams typically Feb–Mar; result May. Portal: cbse.gov.in; results at results.cbse.nic.in and on DigiLocker.
• CISCE: Conducts ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12). Smaller scale, urban-skewed; widely accepted alongside CBSE. Portal: cisce.org.
• State Boards: Each state has its own board (UP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, etc.). Different syllabi, different result calendars (some as early as April, some as late as June).

Registration Process (School-Driven)

Unlike entrance exams, Board exam registration is handled almost entirely by your school. Students do not directly register on a portal — the school submits the LOC (List of Candidates) to the board. Here is what each student does:

Step 1: Pre-Registration (Class 9 or 11, depending on level)

For CBSE Class 10, schools register students in Class 9 itself. For Class 12, the LOC submission happens in Class 11. CISCE follows a similar one-year-ahead registration cycle. Confirm with your school office at the start of the pre-Board year.

Step 2: Subject Selection & Fee Payment

• Subject combination: Confirmed with school before LOC deadline. Changes after LOC closure may incur fees and are restricted.
• Skill subjects: CBSE offers ~40+ skill subjects (AI, Yoga, Financial Markets, etc.) — opt-in via school during Class 11.
• Examination fee: Paid through school to the board. CBSE fee is roughly Rs. 1,500–1,800 per student depending on cycle and category.

Step 3: Verify School-Submitted Details

Once your school submits the LOC, ask for your candidate ID and verify name spelling, parent name, DOB, photograph, subjects, exam centre. Errors after LOC closure are slow to correct — catch them now.

Step 4: Practical / Internal Assessment Schedules

For science streams + skill subjects, practical exams happen in January (1-2 months before theory). The school coordinates with the board for external practical examiners. Plan around your school's practical calendar.

Step 5: Download Admit Card from School

Admit cards are issued through schools (CBSE) or directly on the board portal (CISCE). They are typically distributed 7-10 days before theory exams. The admit card lists your candidate ID, photo, subjects, exam centre and reporting times.

The Board admit card is issued through your school for CBSE and downloaded from cisce.org for ICSE/ISC. Key points common to all boards:

• Download and print the admit card on A4. Monochrome print is acceptable; carry the original along with a backup photocopy.
• Verify all details: Name, photograph, exam centre, date sheet, subject codes, candidate ID. Errors must be flagged to the school office immediately.
• Carry to centre: Admit card + the photo ID specified by the board (school ID for CBSE; Aadhaar for CISCE). Entry is denied without both.
• Reach early: Centres open 30-45 min before exam start. Late entry is denied; CBSE strictly enforces gate-close at 10:00 AM for the 10:30 AM theory window.
• Each subject is a single session. One subject, one day, one slot. There is no two-shift system. Different subjects spread across the date sheet weeks.

How Boards Declare Results

CBSE and CISCE publish raw marks for each subject plus the overall percentage and grade. There is no normalization, no percentile, no shift adjustment because each paper is a single session. Marksheets and pass certificates are available on DigiLocker (CBSE) immediately after result declaration.

Verification, Photocopy & Re-evaluation (CBSE Path)

1. Verification of Marks: First window (~6 days post-result). The board rechecks the addition of marks on your answer sheet. Fee: ~Rs. 500 per subject.
2. Photocopy of Evaluated Answer Sheet: Second window. You can request a scanned copy of your evaluated paper. Fee: ~Rs. 700 per subject.
3. Re-evaluation: Third window. After studying your photocopy, you can flag specific questions for re-evaluation. Fee: ~Rs. 100 per question.

Compartment & Supplementary

If you failed in 1-2 subjects, you are eligible for the compartment / supplementary exam held in July. The Class 12 Supplementary for 2026 is scheduled on 15 July 2026. Application is via the school, with LOC submission beginning 2 June 2026. Supplementary result is typically announced in August. Clear it and your marksheet shows the supplementary date.

Improvement Exam

If you passed but want a better score in one or more subjects, CBSE allows an Improvement Examination held alongside the next year's main exam. You appear privately, and the higher of the two scores becomes your official result.
