Update — 25 May 2026: CBSE has confirmed 15 July 2026 as the single-day Class 12 supplementary (compartment) exam date. LOC (List of Candidates) registration through schools opens 2 June 2026. With the Class 12 main result declared on 13 May at 85.20% pass — meaning roughly 15 in every 100 students have at least one compartment subject — this 7-week preparation window is the most important academic stretch of the year for nearly 2 lakh students. Here is the full eligibility, registration, and study plan.

Who Is Eligible for the Class 12 Compartment Exam 2026?
You qualify for the Class 12 compartment route only if all the following are true:
- You appeared in the CBSE Class 12 board exam in 2026 (not a previous year).
- You have failed in one or two subjects only — and passed all the rest.
- You meet the pass criteria of 33% theory + 33% practical (where applicable) in the subjects you passed.
- You were not declared “Essential Repeat” (failed in 3+ subjects) — in that case you must reappear as a private candidate next year.
Students who failed in three or more subjects are not eligible for compartment and must register for the 2027 main exam as private candidates.
How to Apply — LOC Registration Process
For Regular Students (via your school)
- Your school will share an internal compartment registration form from 2 June 2026.
- Fill in the subject(s) you want to reappear in, sign, and submit to the exam coordinator.
- School uploads your details into the CBSE LOC portal and pays the fee on your behalf.
- You repay the school in cash or transfer — fee is approximately ₹300 per subject.
- Collect the admit card from school in the first week of July.
For Private Candidates
- Visit cbse.gov.in after 2 June 2026.
- Click “Compartment Exam Application — Class XII 2026”.
- Enter roll number, school code, and the failed subject.
- Pay the fee online (₹300 per subject for private candidates; varies for overseas centres).
- Download admit card from the same portal in early July.
The 7-Week Study Plan — From 25 May to 14 July
With 51 days between this post and the exam, here is a realistic week-by-week plan tested with our compartment students last year:
Week 1 (25–31 May): Diagnose
- Re-read the entire NCERT for your failed subject — no notes, no shortcuts.
- List every chapter from the latest CBSE 2026 syllabus and rate yourself 1–5.
- Identify the 3 chapters you scored worst in during the main exam.
Weeks 2–3 (1–14 June): Rebuild Concepts
- One chapter a day from the worst-3 list, with all NCERT exercises solved.
- Maintain an error notebook — every silly mistake gets written down.
- Watch one DIKSHA or NCERT-recommended lecture per chapter, no random YouTube.
Weeks 4–5 (15–28 June): Past Papers
- Solve the last 5 years of CBSE Class 12 board papers under timed conditions.
- Score yourself using the official CBSE marking scheme (available on cbseacademic.nic.in).
- Aim for 50%+ in your first attempt and 65%+ by week 5.
Weeks 6–7 (29 June – 14 July): Full Mocks + Revision
- Three full-length mock exams under 3-hour conditions.
- Daily 30-minute revision of error notebook and formula sheet.
- Last 48 hours: sleep, no new chapters, only flash-card revision.
Will a Compartment Pass Affect Your Marksheet?
This is the single most-asked question. The honest answer:
- Your final marksheet will not say “compartment” — it will only show the new marks for the cleared subject, dated July 2026.
- Most Indian universities (Delhi University, central universities, state universities) accept compartment-cleared candidates for admission, though some private/foreign universities may have stricter rules. Always check the university’s admission notice.
- For competitive exams like JEE, NEET, CLAT, CUET — eligibility is based on passing Class 12, not on whether you passed in first attempt or compartment. The 2026 main attempt remains valid for all 2026 exam cycles where the result is already in hand.
If You Failed in the Compartment Too
Students who do not clear the July 2026 compartment exam can:
- Reappear in the 2027 main exam as a private candidate (registration opens September 2026).
- Apply only for the failed subject(s) without redoing the whole Class 12.
- Continue with skill-based diploma courses or open-school routes (NIOS) in parallel — most do not require a Class 12 pass certificate to start.
Parallel Track — Should You Also Apply for Verification?
If you missed pass by only 1–5 marks in your failed subject, applying for verification and re-evaluation (26 May – 5 June) in parallel makes financial sense. Verification costs ₹500 and re-evaluation ₹100/question — if a totalling correction or a generous re-evaluator awards you the missing marks, you may avoid the compartment entirely. Many students do both in parallel.
Counselling and Mental Health — A Note
A compartment result is not a verdict on intelligence or future. CBSE itself runs a free 24×7 tele-counselling helpline (1800-11-8004) for students and parents during the result and compartment cycle. Use it. Talk to parents, teachers, and friends — and remember that some of India’s most successful professionals had a compartment in their school days.

Who is eligible for the CBSE Class 12 compartment exam?
Students who appeared in the 2026 board exam and failed in one or two subjects only are eligible. Those who failed in three or more subjects must reappear as private candidates in 2027.
How do I apply for the CBSE compartment exam 2026?
Regular students apply through their school via the LOC portal opening 2 June 2026. Private candidates apply directly at cbse.gov.in. Fee is approximately ₹300 per subject.
Will the compartment exam affect my marksheet?
No — the final marksheet will show the revised subject marks dated July 2026 without any “compartment” label. Most Indian universities accept compartment-passed candidates for admission.
